Ringed by thickly forested mountains, illicit cigarette factories dot
the countryside, carved deeply into caves, high into the hills, and
even buried beneath the earth. By one tally, some 200 operations are
hidden in Yunxiao, a southwestern Fujian county about twice the area of
New York City. Over the last 10 years, production of counterfeit
cigarettes has soared in China, jumping eightfold since 1997 to an
unprecedented 400 billion cigarettes a year—enough to supply every U.S.
smoker with 460 packs a year. Once famed for its bright yellow loquat
fruit, Yunxiao is the trade's heartland, the source of half of China's
counterfeit production.

In the 1970s and ’80s, chances were good that anyone traveling the New York subways rode at least once in a car emblazoned with “Iz the Wiz.” Cryptic but euphonious, often abbreviated to the ultraminimal Iz, the signature could be seen all over the subway system: fat capital letters spray-painted on a door, below a window, across an entire car or even along the full length of a train.
Iz the Wiz was a legend among graffiti artists, by almost all accounts “the longest-reigning all-city king in N.Y.C. history,” as the graffiti Web site at149st.com puts it. In other words, Iz put his name, or tag, on subway cars running on every line in the system more times than any other artist.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford has been hiking along the Appalachian Trail, a spokesman said Monday night, explaining a days long absence that perplexed fellow state leaders.
Sanford hadn't been at work for several days and his office hadn't been in touch with him. The lieutenant governor, other fellow lawmakers and even his wife said they didn't know where he was, leading critics to question who was in charge of South Carolina.
this one is for penrod township. been a big week for south carolina, with the governor going missing and lucas glover (clemson - obviously) winning the open. when i think of south carolina i think of penrod t-ship. and then i think of the time when loyal readers big-e, glenn hubbard and hank chinaski lived down there. and i think of jasper brinkley. and also petey pablo (even though he loved north not south carolina).

i hope you all come and visit me when i move to brighton beach. i went on saturday (with intrepid loyal reader andre the giant), with the goal being to schvitz at the royal palace baths and maybe poke around a little bit. we did that and more. much more.

ballads, known as corridos, in his honor. He is known throughout Mexico simply as "El Chapo," Mexican slang for a short and stocky man.
Adding to his mystique, "El Chapo" has survived several assassination attempts by rival gangs, including a 1993 attack that killed a Roman Catholic cardinal. He also pulled off the greatest escape in modern Mexico: from a maximum security prison in 2001 -- in a laundry cart. Ever since, he has stayed a step ahead of Mexican and U.S. officials in a game of cat and mouse that is now in its ninth year.

love the kettle of fish so much, that after the 10th anniversary party i came home and did some semi drunken blogging. then i got sleepy and went to sleep without posting my man love for my local bar. so now i repost for your enjoyment some semi drunk blogging (mostly unedited) about the kettle from about 3:45 last thursday morning.
Last night was the 10th anniversary of the kettle of fish.
Barry beck and Andre the giant were there when I got there. Miller high life (who's the originator) would have been there if he weren't in costa rica. A-game would have been there if it wasn't past her bedtime.
Kof (respect the abbreviation) is the closest thing to a local bar that fredeeky has. Many loyal readers have met there. Many have observed and respected there.
